Vertical Access Training for Construction
(Ascent & Descent – Controlled System)
Hands-On Access Training for Situations Where Standard Equipment Cannot Be Used
Delivered in accordance with Ontario safety regulations
Vertical Access Training for Construction (Ascent & Descent)
Vertical access training for construction environments focused on controlled ascent and descent using access systems.
This program is designed for situations where lifts, ladders, or suspended platforms are not practical, providing a controlled method of vertical access using a rope-based system with independent backup.
Training is delivered in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and Ontario Regulation 213/91 (Construction Projects), supporting compliance with:
- Section 138 (worker training requirement for suspended systems)
- Section 138.1 (demonstrated worker proficiency)
- Section 141.5 (work planning and rescue procedures)
- Section 96(1) (competent worker requirement)
- General fall protection requirements under OHSA and Regulation 213/91
Where vertical access systems are used in a manner comparable to suspended access equipment, applicable provisions under Sections 136.1–142.06 are considered.
Training is available at our Toronto training center and on-site across Ontario.
All prices are in CAD.
Training Overview
This program prepares workers to perform controlled vertical movement using access systems for ascent and descent in construction environments.
The training focuses on a limited and defined scope of use, ensuring workers understand how to safely access vertical work areas using a controlled system with independent backup.
This is not a full rope access training program. It is a targeted training solution designed for specific job site requirements.
What You Will Learn
- Controlled ascent using access systems
- Controlled descent using self-braking devices
- Proper use of systems with independent backup
- Identification of hazards associated with vertical access
- Fall protection integration within access systems
- Equipment setup and system checks
- Pre-use inspection procedures
- Recognition of unsafe conditions and required corrective actions
- Basic emergency response awareness and system limitations
System Responsibility and Safe Use
Participants are trained to:
- Verify that a valid anchor system has been engineered and approved prior to use
- Ensure a system with independent backup is properly installed
- Identify conditions where vertical access methods must not be used
- Follow site-specific work plans and rescue procedures
This training reinforces that vertical access systems must be used within clearly defined limits and under controlled conditions.
Practical Competency
Training includes both theoretical instruction and hands-on practical evaluation.
Participants must demonstrate:
- Safe ascent and descent using vertical access systems
- Proper use of descent and ascent devices
- Correct setup of backup systems
- Ability to identify hazards and apply corrective measures
This ensures alignment with Ontario’s requirement that workers are trained and competent before performing work at height.
Certification
Upon successful completion, participants receive certification confirming that their training aligns with:
- Ontario Regulation 213/91 (Construction Projects)
- Section 138 (training requirement)
- Section 138.1 (demonstrated proficiency)
- Section 141.5 (work plan and rescue awareness)
- Section 96(1) (competent worker requirement)
- General fall protection requirements under OHSA
Scope and Limitations (IMPORTANT)
This training is limited to:
- Vertical ascent and descent only
- Controlled use of access systems
- Work performed within defined system parameters
This training does not include:
- Advanced rope access techniques
- Rope-to-rope transfers or complex rigging
- Full rope access certification programs
For advanced rope access work, additional specialized training is required.
Who Should Attend
- Construction workers requiring vertical access where standard equipment cannot be used
- Workers performing limited access tasks at height
- Maintenance personnel accessing difficult-to-reach areas
- Supervisors responsible for planning vertical access work
